Munro
Web Pages
|
There are a number of very good sites relating to Munros and other hills. It was not my intention to compete with these nor did I wish to supercede them. McClassify's Munro Bagging On The Web came about beacuse I could not readilly find the type of information contained in these pages. I also wanted something a little bit more lighthearted than just a list of peaks and pages. | ||

Why
Images of Munros?
|
In
December 1997 three of us climbed Ben Vorlich (Loch Lomond). The
weather was clam and dry for the time of year but above 1000' the visibility
was 50m, at most. Now, with some mountains it is quite simple to
get to the top - you walk generally upwards and you follow the path.
Not so with Ben Vorlich. Having reached the "Little Hills" from Ardvorlich
we needed to be very careul with our navigation. Eventually we found
a path climbing up a more substantial peak and there was a cairn on top.
Was this the summit? Our 1:50,000 map indicated a trig point on an
adjacent peak. We tried to find it but could not (the visibility
was still poor). With darkness due at 15:30 we had to set off down
to Ardvorlich.
It occured to me that if I could find a picture of Ben Vorlich's summit then we would know whether we had made it or not. Unfortunately no book I could find showed the summit at close range and neither could I find it on the web. So, now that there is an library of images to access there will never be the same trauma again. Before setting off to climb an Munro, climbers will know beforehand what others have already seen and fumbling in the fog would be consigned to folklore! |
